Ultimate Avengers: The Movie (Animated) Review

I honestly should have reviewed this movie before The Avengers came out, but I forgot about it and ran out of time. The Avengers movie takes a lot of stuff from the Ultimate Universe which is what this movie was based on.

A quick summary of the Ultimate Universe. It is not considered the mainstream universe people usually talk about when it comes to comics. It was made to re-imagine the characters and give them a more updated origin story. An example is that mutants were not the next step in evolution… they were actually an experiment gone wrong as the US Government tried to create another super soldier. A lot of Marvel movies coming out, including the newest Spider-Man and all of the Avenger prequels, have heavy influences from the Ultimate Universe.

Anyway, this movie chronicles how Nick Fury tries to bring the Ultimate Universe Avenger’s together. In this movie we have a cast of Captain America, Black Widow, Ant Man, Wasp, Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man. Well I should say Bruce Banner as he is on the team as a scientist, not because of the Hulk (sound familiar?). Nick Fury is trying to bring them together to stop an attack by the Chitauri (sound familiar?). And in the beginning, they don’t get along and everyone tries to do their own thing (sound familiar?).

I watched it the first time and was completely confused as the origins of the characters were so off because I didn’t know it was based on a different Universe. The second time, I embraced that fact, kept a more open mind, and really enjoyed it. It is definitely an above average animated movie. There was plenty of action and the characterization of the heroes and the team was enjoyable. I do wish the movie would have focused less on Captain America and more on say… Thor and I wish the motivations of the Chitauri were touched on a bit more. But overall… nicely done.

Rotten Tomatoe’s Rating: ??? Audience: 63%

Shadow’s Rating: 8/10– Fun movie that was well done.

Comic Book Review: May 23, 2012

Books I read last week (05/23) include:

  • Amazing Spider-Man #686
  • Aquaman #9
  • Batman Incorporated #1
  • Deadpool #55
  • Fantastic Four #606
  • Journey Into Mystery #638 (Exiled crossover)
  • Mighty Thor #14
  • Secret Avengers #27 (AvX crossover)
  • Ultimate Comics X-Men #12

Top 3 comics and this weeks list after the jump.

3) Deadpool #55

– Deadpool is no longer deformed and no longer has his healing factor which makes him feel alive again. He decides he needs to kill a big name, and goes after the Intellegecia. In the end however, he is nearly killed as he forgot what it was like to not have his healing factor.

2) Secret Avengers #27 (AvX crossover)

– Captain Marvel is back and ambushes the Secret Avengers, leaving Thor, Beast, and Vision for dead while capturing the rest. Apparently, he is somewhat brain washed by the Kree leaders along with the rest of the planet as they prepare for the Phoenix to cause their rebirth into the most powerful empire in the universe. Or something like that. Vision starts to turn the brain washing signal off while Thor confronts Captain Marvel as they fight. The Kree soldiers kill the non-brain washed Kree citizens while the Phoenix looms over the planet. This issue makes more sense than my summary makes it sound lol.

1) Aquaman #9

– Black Manta is still looking for members of Aquaman’s former team while Aquaman looks for them as well to protect them. We also learn some back history to the rivalry between the two, learning that Manta caused Aquaman’s dad to have a heart attack, so Aquaman killed Manta’s father. At the end of the comic, Manta stands face to face with Aquaman.

Comics I will be reading this week (05/30) include:
  • The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #39
  • Batman Annual #1
  • FF #18
  • Incredible Hulk #8
  • New Mutants #43 (Exiled crossover)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #10
  • Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #11
  • The Walking Dead #98
  • Wolverine #307
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #11 (AvX crossover)
  • X-Men #29
  • X-Men Legacy #267 (AvX crossover)

Brutal New Trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I have been cautiously optimistic about this movie. The premise seems downright awesome and fun but I was afraid it could be too weird and too cheesy. But then I saw the newest, rated R trailer and well… check it out. This trailer will decide if you will see this movie or not.

Holy crap. I didn’t expect that sort of violence and kick-assery. All the other trailers were PG-13-ish and I just assumed and forgot this was an R rated movie. FINALLY! There are way too many PG-13 movies that would have been better if they are R rated.

The action scenes look like the Matrix + Blade + Abraham Lincoln with an Ax. I don’t even care about the story right now. Just based on the action alone this movie should be worth the price of admission.

Summer 2012 Movie Preview

I told ya’ll that after Avengers came out, that shit was about to get real movie wise. And it is. There are TONS of potential fun movies and some really epic ones coming this summer. Sadly I won’t be able to see as many as I hope due to the fact movies are expensive and I am broke but holy moly take a look at the list below.

Summer for me is June through August. Click the name to head to the IMBD page of the movie. If I missed anything, let me know in the comments.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Date: June 1

Verdict: Looks good. A must see. I think this movie will surprise people.

Date: June 8

Verdict: If you are into these types of movies, this is a must see. It really isn’t my cup of tea but it is definitely something I want to see eventually. I just don’t think I can justify the $10 theater ticket for this one.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Date: June 22

Verdict: This will be entertaining as hell or stupid as shit. I am very interested in it but I will see what the reviews say on a few sites I trust first. [I just saw the latest trailer. Nevermind… must see for me. — Shadow]

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Date: June 29

Verdict: The trailers look like they are totally revamping the G.I. Joe line, which is a good thing as the first movie was “meh.” Taking out Tatum and the Wayan and replacing them with the Rock, Bruce Willis, and more ninjas is a solid choice. Will probably see this if the reviews are decent.
[This movie has been pushed back to March 2013 at the last moment. — Shadow]

The Amazing Spider-Man

Date: July 3

Verdict: I don’t understand why the reboot is here already. And I don’t understand the direction of the movie. But it is still Spider-Man and Spider-Man is cool and I will be watching this.

The Dark Knight Rises

Date: July 20

Verdict: The big cheese of the summer. Batman Begins is one of my favorite movies ever. The Dark Knight was great, although it is incredibly overrated. I doubt many people will be skipping the end of this trilogy.

Total Recall

Date: August 3

Verdict: More of a DVD rental sort of thing in a summer with this many good movies.

The Bourne Legacy

Date: August 3

Verdict: I loved the first three Bourne movies but I really hope this movie isn’t the same thing, just with a different actor. Renner was excellent in The Avengers so I have high hopes. I just hope the plot is interesting and not the same thing all over again.

The Expendables 2

Date: August 17

Verdict: Stallone. Arnold. Willis. Li. Norris. Van Damme. Rourke. Statham. Terry. Sign me up.

Pull Ups: BWx8x3

One Arm Machine Reverse Flyes: 115x15x2, 100×15

– Once again, the smith machine stuff is done to work the muscle, not to see how much I can smith machine press because who gives a fuck? So it is done smith, wide gripped, feet up, bodybuilding style. So don’t judge my weight faggots.

– Tried to do hammer chins, hurt like hell. This is what flared my elbow up bad. No biggie.

Training Log: Legs

Warm Up:

Cressey Warm Up #2

Kneeling Pallof Presses: 55x10x3

Sumo Deadlift, belt: 315x5x3

One Legged Leg Press: 110×20

– Once again, this is mainly rehab. I am deadlifting to build up weak muscles, not to get good at deadlifting. Big difference.

– I am going to take a video of my knees next time I do one legged leg presses. They shake like crazy on the negative. I am doing those instead of lunges because I don’t think I am stable enough to do lunges. I would just be enforcing the bad mechanics my muscles already exhibit.

G.I. Joe: Relatiation Push Back to March '13 at the Last Minute

I have never heard of this happening before.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation has been pushed back to March of 2013. For those who did not know, it was supposed to come out June 29, 2012… aka in a month.

The reason? They decided at the last minute to post-convert the movie into 3-D so they can make more money.

This decision baffles me and pisses me off at the same time. They have already spent a ton of money advertising the movie, including Super Bowl commercials. The actors have already been giving interviews for the movie. And there was actually some excitement for it after the very bad first one.

But at the last minute they get greedy, push it back a year, and hope to recoup the money by using 3-D for a movie that wasn’t meant to be in 3-D. Aka… the 3-D will suck donkey dick.

I was really looking forward to this movie. The trailers made it seem pretty damn good and a definite improvement over the first one. The fact that it will try to bleed money out of people to make an inferior product just grinds my gears. If the movie is only offered in 3-D… I will not go see it on principle. I refuse. I am sick of tired of movies only being offered in 3-D especially when the movie was never supposed to be in 3-D in the first place. Ticket prices are already ridiculous, the popcorn and such is downright criminal (thus I never get any) and then topping it off with bad, post converted 3-D is too much.

Oh well, there are so many movies coming out this summer I want to see that I guess I can go see one of the ones I was on the fence about instead. [On another note, summer movie preview is coming this Monday.]
