Training Log: Week 5- ME Squats

Warm Up: Foam Roller, Lacrosse Ball, Stretch, Mobility, Facilitation, Knee Rehab

Squats, no belt: 315×6, 315×3, 315×1

Goodmornings: 95x12x3

Kirk Shrugs: 185×10, 185×9, Shrugs: 185×20 -ss- Dead Bugs: 3 sets per side

– Knee is holding up but once again I am being careful with my depth and once again I am sitting back more than usual which isn’t as strong of a form for me.

– None of the squats were a “limit” lift as I stopped as soon as my form broke. I did notice something with my upper back weakness that is more of a form problem than a true weakness so hopefully I can get that ironed on.

– Decently happy with 315×6 without a belt all things considering.

Prometheus Review

What the fuck did I just watch?

Prometheus was/is the much talked about prequel to the Alien franchise. As the trailers and such show, it chronicles a trip to another planet where scientists hope to find “our makers” called Engineers. And of course, being an R rated film about aliens, it doesn’t quite work out that way. This is supposed to be a sequel that many thought at one time would explain the rise of the Xenomorph (face hugger skull splitting black aliens in Alien) but it doesn’t lol. In reality it is barely a prequel and only touches on other aspects of the Alien franchise. It felt like a stand alone movie with something thrown in here and there to connect to the other films.

You should never watch a movie, see the credits roll, and go “Huh?” And that is exactly what I did with this movie. The actions by some of the characters were simply baffling. Parts of the movie I didn’t even understand to be honest. Sure, I can look stuff up on the internet and hear theories or see deleted scenes that were well… deleted from the movie that actually explain some shit but you shouldn’t have to do that when you buy something. There is a difference between a movie making you think and a movie just not doing a very good job of explaining character’s motivations or actions. And Prometheus definitely fell more into the second part of the previous sentence. And anytime you have to rely on DELETED SCENES to explain something means you fucked up and shouldn’t have deleted it in the first place.

The movie had its moments. Fassbender was outstanding as David and David was a very odd character. Some of the alien beings were pretty cool looking and the special effects in general were fantastic. Some of the action of tense, but Alien did that so much better.

All in all… “meh” describes it best. Glad I didn’t pay 10 bucks to see it in the theaters. You can tell this movie was made just to make more movies (there is going to be a trilogy) that explains stuff. Which is annoying.

Rotten Tomatoe’s Rating: 74% Audience: 72%

Shadow’s Rating: 5/10– “Huh” and “Meh” should never be your reactions at the end of a movie.

Pros, cons, and spoilers after the jump.

Marvel Announces Age of Ultron Event

Age of Ultron has been a long rumored event that will finally hit the stores from March to June with 10 main issues total. There will also be a few tie ins as well from the big books.

Age of Ultron is exactly as it sounds: Marvel’s premier robot finally succeeding in taking over the Earth.

Other than that, we do not know much. We know it will be written by Bendis for better or worse. We know there is a lot of destruction and casualties. We know there is some sort of resistance naturally. This event IS in continuity and this is not an alternate dimension story like Age of Apocalypse.

And that is all we really know. There is a lot of secrecy in this event and we have been promised a crazy, “no  one will see this coming” ending.

This should be good. Ultron is one bad motherfucker so this event should be interesting. And hopefully it spring boards Ultron being featured in Avengers 3. A man can dream right?

Training Log: Week 5- Upper Body

Warm Up: Foam Roller, Lacrosse Ball, Stretch, Mobility, Shoulder Rehab

Cable Rows, 2min rest: 180x15x3

30* Incline DB Bench Press: 100×10

30* Incline Fat Grip DB Bench Press, 2min rest: 75x10x2

Pull Ups, 1min rest: BW(199)x18, BWx7, BWx4

Floor EZ Bar Skulls: 50x12x3 -ss- DB Cleans: 15x15x3

V Bar Cable Ext: 80×15, 90×15, 100×15 -ss- Fat Grip BB Curls: 55x15x3

– Solid day.

– Knees feel decent from  yesterday. Back is sore (not in a bad way per say) due to changing my form and sitting back a little more. Prefer to stay more upright for this reason and go knees out instead (plus that is a stronger squatting form for me) but do what I can when I can.

– Used the hand held body fat thing at the gym. Put me 15.6% at 199 lbs. I don’t believe these things are accurate at all (neither are the calipers from most people though) but it still works to monitor progress in my opinion. I was 235 lbs and 27% BF when I started according to the thing.

Training Log: Week 4- 1×10 Squats?

Warm Up: Foam Roller, Lacrosse Ball, Stretch, Mobility, Glute Rehab, Knee Rehab

Squats, belt: 275×1, 295×10

Goodmornings: 95x10x3

BB Reverse Lunges: 95×10

Dead Bugs: 3 sets -ss- DB Shrugs: 100x25x3

– I could squat I just was VERY careful. My descent was stupid slow (for me anyway) and my depth was like an inch higher than usual. Also, instead of pushing my knees out (like I usually squat) I just focused on sitting back as much as possible.

– I could tell the knee wasn’t 100% but it didn’t hurt. Just felt weird.

– I stopped at 1×10 because I didn’t want to push my luck. It was hard just because of the slow descent + me not doing reps over 5 EVER.

– I experimented with stuff at home and lunges didn’t hurt so I gave them a try today. I will see tomorrow how I feel and if they are a possibility.

– All things considering, I got a solid workout in while working around an injury and not making it worse.

Mrs. Shadow's Journey to Her First 10K

For those that have forgotten, Mrs. Shadow and I welcomed our first baby into the world about 4 months ago. Since then, my wife has been a dieting and exercising machine along with being the best mommy in the world and working a full time job to support my “still in school” ass.

Recently, she has gotten more and more into running and she talked about doing some sort of a race. I saw that the St. Pete Classic races were coming up in January 19 and she immediately signed up for the 10 K run.

This is her first 10 K and she will be using this blog to chronicle the journey! Anything she writes for the blog will be in PURPLE FONT.

Thursday, November 22- REST

Training Log: Week 4- 3×5 Bench Press

Warm Up: Foam Roller, Lacrosse Ball, Stretch, Mobility, Shoulder Rehab

Cable OH Ext: 3×15 -ss- Cable Rope Curls: 3×15

– My right knee isn’t healing. Every time I think it is getting better it reminds me it is not.

– What is even more fun is, I can’t find a single person at school or a single thing online with any of the same symptoms I have. Fuck my life.

– I have no desire to take more time off squatting and then building myself back up for the 100th time. Absolutely none. Every time I think I am finally physically healthy and every time I am finally enjoying my time in the gym again, something else goes pop and says, “Oh hey there… don’t forget your life sucks. Here is a reminder.”

– I am now just waiting for my shoulder to go pop again so I can quit lifting all together and take up competitive movie watching. But then I would probably develop macular degeneration or some god forsaken disease.

Gladiator Review

Shadow’s Overall Rating: God Status— Are you not entertained? This movie is epic.

Shadow’s First Viewing Rating: 10/10
Shadow’s Rewatchability Rating: 10/10

Rotten Tomatoe’s Rating: 76%, 7.1/10
Audience: 87%, 7.6/10

Plot in a Nut Shell: A Roman general bad ass gets caught in a power struggle he wants no part of and ends up a gladiator. He is such a bad ass that he fights his way back to Rome for revenge. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!??!!

One of my favorite movies out there. I am stunned the RT rating is so low.

I don’t think there is a single part of this movie I don’t enjoy. I am trying to think of a con to put in the later section and I can only think of one. And that is the romance part that wasn’t fully explained and honestly, isn’t enough of a con to take away from the movie.

This movie has it all. The story is awesome. The action is awesome. There are numerous awesome quotes and bad ass moments. The villain is creepy as fuck.

There isn’t a dull part to this movie. It starts awesome and continues being awesome right to the very last second.

For those who live in the mountains with no electricity (so how are you reading this?), the story is about Maximus, a beloved General in the Roman army. Long story short, and so I don’t ruin the movie, he is betrayed, ends up a slave/gladiator, and makes it back to Rome where he plots his revenge. It is as awesome as it souds.

I have probably watched this movie 100 times. Love it. And if you don’t like it, you are probably dead inside.

Pros, cons, and spoilers after the jump.
