Marvel Event- Infinity Review

Basic Plot: The Builders were coming to destroy Earth and were destroying other galaxies along the way. Avengers weren’t having any of that so they left Earth to join the Galactic Council to stop them. With no Avengers on Earth, Thanos decides it is a good time to invade Earth, to look for the Infinity Gems and to kill his last remaining son, Thane. The universe realizes once again that you don’t fuck with Earth 616.

Favorite Moment: Thor being a BOSS and killing the Builder to rally the troops.

Worst Moments: Star Brand. Captain Universe. Thane. = a bunch of plot devices to solve the problem.

Game Changing Moments: The Builders know about the Incursions. Black Bolt releasing the Terrigan Mist world wide creating tons of Inhumans. Black Bolt being weakened by the bomb and the fact he is basically on the run. Black Bolt telling Maximus and the Dog about the Illuminati. T’challa being banned from Wakanda due to hiding Namor. Black Swan released. Avengers are considered universe wide heroes. Ebony Maw has control of Thane basically. (whew, I think that is everything important)

It is about time Marvel produced an event that didn’t suck.

This event was pretty damn good. In fact, it is probably the best event I have read from Marvel in a good bit. Much better than the shit tastic Fear Itself and Avengers vs X-men that is for sure.

I think the thing that made it work was the fact it had a consistent narrative throughout. Avengers and New Avengers flowed into wonderfully and there wasn’t any disconnect issue to issue. The tie ins I read were great as well. Mighty Avengers looks like it is going to be one of my new favorite books. Thunderbolts continued its narrative but tied in the events perfectly and flawlessly.

Now it wasn’t perfect that was for sure. It was almost TOO big and would have been better off as two separate events– one with the builders in space and one with Thanos. The bad guys were so overpowered again that they needed plot devices to save the day essentially.

But all in all this was a huge success that changes the Marvel U AND there were NO shock deaths to draw attention to it lol. I highly recommend it.

Well That Was a Waste of Time (Travel): X-Men: Battle of the Atom Review

I am not even going to spend a lot time on this event because it was basically a giant waste of time.

When first announced, many people thought that this event would lead to the combining of the “two” X-men groups once again. Basically, Cyclops and Wolverine get over Schism and the X-Men become the X-Men once again.

What we got was another horrible story about time travel that took 10 issues to tell and but it really didn’t say anything. It was a bunch of hinting, and bunch of future and past X-men, and a bunch of crap.

Each issue was essentially someone time traveling around and we got to see what happened to the present X-men. Weird shit such as Colossus with the soul sword, Phoenix Quire, Wizard Ice Man, Xorn/Jean Grey, Raze (Logan and Mystique’s future kid), and Xavier’s grandson. Seriously, each issue was essentially someone moving in time, hints at bad things, they show some ‘new’ characters, and a bunch of chitter chatter.

So the basic plot of the whole damn thing. Some future X-men come back and say the past O5 need to go back to the past where they belong. Turns out this group of X-men are actually the future Brotherhood. Another group of X-men from the future show up and they are the real future X-men and they are trying to stop the Brotherhood. Why does the future suck? Never fully explained and it was just hinted at to be honest. The X-men lead by Wolverine and the X-men lead by Cyclops banter over what to do. Bad X-men try to send the O5 back but it wouldn’t work. Big fight between Brotherhood and all the X-men. Lots of future X-men die. Some of the Brotherhood get away.

The aftermath of the event? O5 go with Cyclop’s group along with Kitty. Future X-men Kymera stays in the present to hunt down the remaining Brotherhood. People are mad at SHIELD because they have Sentinels. And everything else goes right back to where it was before.

Nothing was accomplished. Nothing cool really happened. It didn’t really make any sense. Just more shitty writing and shitty premises for the main X-Men titles that have been pretty bad since AvX.

Verdict: Waste of time to read. Read what happens on Wiki, and start reading the good X-men books like X-Men: Legacy, Wolverine, and hopefully Amazing X-Men.

That Month in Comics: March 2013

Best of the Best

All New X-Men #8– O5 Jean is getting to “oh shit” levels of scary.

Avenging Spider-Man #18– Just plain awesome characterizations of both Thor and Spock. And the end panel is just fascinating.

Batman #18– Batman is losing it due to Damien’s/Robin’s death but is brought back to reality by this Harper chick.

New Avengers #4– The Illuminati go to another universe during an excursion… only to come face-to-face with another universe’s Galactus. Instead of just letting Galactus do their job for them, they decide to fight so they can try and save both Earth’s. Next issue is going to be very interesting.

Superior Spider-Man #5- Spock shoots Massacre in the head. Holy moly.

Thor: God of Thunder #6– Back story on Gorr and why he hates the Gods and how he obtained his deadly weapon. Oh, and we see what he has done to a lot of the Gods not to mention his”ultimate” goal… the Godbomb.

X-Men Legacy #7 and #8- The oddest book out their is still one of the best. Too much to explain just read it!

Iron Man #7

Nova #2

Thunderbolts #6

Uncanny X-Force #3

Wolverine and the X-Men #27- Finally an issue that wasn’t terrible.

Age of Ultron #1/10, #2/10,and #3/10- If this was coming out monthly instead of weekly, I would drop it. It kind of sucks and once again, nothing has really happened beyond really bad characterization. Black Panther dying FROM A FALL? What the fuck.

Avengers #7 and #8- It is just boring at this point. Everything seems to be set-up on top of set up. Have a huge team of Avengers and all I get is more set-up.

Cable and X-Force #5

Daredevil #24

Daredevil: End of Days #6/8

Justice League #18

Morbius: The Living Vampire #3- This book gets maybe 2 more issues to at least be average before I stop wasting my time.

That Month in Comics: February 2013

ironman #6

Best of the Best

Batman #17– This was supposed to be “shocking!” It wasn’t but it was still entertaining. The Joker never (physically) mutilate any of the Bat family but he seemed to have shook them up mentally. Joker once again falls in a pit with no body found but he will be back of course.

New Avengers #3– Beast is brought into the group after he discovers the Infinity Gem left to him by Professor X. He is retrieved by the other members, much to Namor’s disdain. An incursion occurs and they agree that Captain America should wield the Infinity Guantlet since it is his idea. Captain America stops the incursion, but the gems end up breaking (except the time gem which just vanishes) because of it. After a tussle, the Illuminati convene where Captain America tells them that they cannot start destroying universes and they must look for other options. The group disagrees, turns on Cap, and Dr. Strange uses a spell to wipe his mind. This comic is EPIC!

Justice League #17– The Justice League plus the reserves fight to repel the Atlanteans as Aquaman fights his brother. Aquaman wins, Orm concedes the the crown to Aquaman the rightful king, and Aquaman commands the army to stand down. Vankko or whatever gives Aquaman the trident and he sends the Trench monsters back to the deep. Aquaman keeps Orm at the surface and sends Vankoo to Atlantis prison. Justice League only made it to the best of the best because it focused on Aquaman, the best book on the DC side for sure.

Uncanny Avengers #4– Havok and Scarlet Witch confront a mind controlled Thor in an epic battle that Witch eventually wins by using powers she didn’t want to use (can barely control it) and throwing Thor out of Earth. Cap is being mind controlled by Skull who tells him that his American ideal is dead (and its true and hits home to be honest). Rogue eventually shows up, turns off Skull’s telepathy, Skull is hit really hard and eventually is taken away by the Water woman before someone can kill him. In a “flash forward” scene, will are shown a world taken over by the Red Skull as Onslaught!

Uncanny X-Men #1– Scott can’t control his powers. Magneto is severely downgraded. Emma has no telepathy (and is thus useless and boring). Scott is hell bent on starting a mutant revolution/war. And… Magneto is a traitor who is going to help SHIELD take Scott down? Wut?

All New X-Men #7

Aquaman #17

Avenging Spider-Man #17

Cable and X-Force #4- This comic is picking up. Cable’s group just murdered a bunch of people as they were trying to stop a virus spread.

Captain America #4

Daredevil: End of Days #5/8

Deadpool #5

Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1

Guardians of the Galaxy Infinity #1

Indestructible Hulk #4

Punisher: War Zone #5/5

Secret Avengers #1- I like the idea of SHIELD using some of the Avengers on missions and then wiping their minds of it. Interesting concept that will eventually blow up in their face and lead to a massive shit storm. Especially if they start using more powerful members like Hulk.

Superior Spider-Man #3- I am loving Spock.

Superior Spider-Man #4

Thor: God of Thunder #5

Thunderbolts #4- Just like X-Force, this comic is finally coming into its own.

Thunderbolts #5

Uncanny X-Men #2

Venom #31

X-Men Legacy #6

A+X 4

Avengers #5- Smasher is boring. I will be glad when the new character intros are over with.

Conan the Barbarian #13

Daredevil #23

Gambit #9

Iron Man #6

Morbius: The Living Vampire #2

Nova #1

Savage Wolverine #2

Scarlet Spider #14

Secret Avengers #37

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #19

Wolverine and the X-Men #25

Young Avengers #2

Avengers #6- Hickman needs to step his game up.

Hawkeye #8

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #18- This change of dimension thing is lame. More Shredder please.

Avengers Arena #4

Avengers Arena #5

This Month in Comics: January 2013

Best of the Best

Avenging Spider-Man #16– Spock (Spider-Man + Ock) teams up with the X-Men to tackle some giant spider thing. Wolverine realizes something isn’t right with “Peter,” especially after Spock decks Logan. Logan ends up getting Spock in a choke hold and tells Rachel to read his mind, but in the end, Spock talks them out of it and Rachel refuses. Also realize that the giant spider thing was created by the Jackal.

Batman #16– Batman heads to Arkum Asylum to confront the Joker. He blasts through all his tricks and side shows until he gets to the end, only to realize that Joker has captured all of his side-kicks and demands Batman gets in an electric chair, where he is electrocuted  Also, the Joker has someone on a silver plate that is supposedly horrifying to Two Face, Riddler, and the Penguin.

New Avengers #1 & #2– In a gist… T’challa has come across a person who is destroying alternate reality Earths/Universes to stop “incursions”… aka when two Universes collide and destroy themselves. T’challa takes out the Black Swan, only after losing 3 of his brightest young Wakandans. Due to the threat of universes destroying each other, T’challa calls on the most powerful men in the MU: The Illuminati (Black Bolt, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Namor, Reed Richards). They agree to use the Infinity Gems to try and fix this mess. BB, Capt, and Namor go to find Xavier’s missing Gem while Stark, T’challa, and Reed work on tech to possibly stop the next incursion. This is REALLY brief summary of an awesome book. The Illuminati discuss the possibility that they may need to be the ones to “do what is necessary” and destroy alternate reality Earth’s in order to save the one they live in. Only Captain America really objects to this plan.

Superior Spider-Man #1 & 2– We get our first real missions of Spock. We find out he is MUCH more brutal than Parker and seems to lay traps on whoever he is hunting/fighting. He is also much more unethical. We also find out that Parker’s spirit is still inside of Ock and he repeatedly stops Spock from killing whatever villain he faces. It seems like Parker isn’t gone after all. This has been surprisingly fun so far.

Thor: God of Thunder #4– In the future, King Thor has been defeated and begs for death… only to be placed back on his throne and left to heal once again. Young Thor heads to the cave of the God Killer where he is ambushed, caught, and tortured. Present Thor heads to his same cave, only to find another God hiding there as this God drops hints that Thor caused all this mess due to his actions in this cave in the past. Present Thor heads to the city of the Gods and finds it on fire due to the God Butcherer. He finds out he is headed to the Gods of Time and Thor follows, where he is transported to the same time frame as old King Thor. Excellent Book.

Uncanny Avengers #3– Red Skull uses his new powers to cause riots in the streets where humans are attacking mutants. The Uncanny Avengers arrive to try and stop the madness. Skulls powers are even having some effects on Captain America and Thor. Thor ends up double teamed by Skull and Pastor John and essentially becomes there slaves. Witch and Rogue snap out the control and tell Logan what happened to Xavier… which causes him to go into Berzerker Mode as he attacks Skull and chops off his hand. One of the henchman uses their power to turn of Logan’s X-Gene and at the same time, Logan is obliterated by Thor. This book is finally picking up steam.

X-men Legacy #4 & #5– Book to hard to explain. Legion is still fighting off the personalities in his head in order to pick the right powers at the right time. He ends up fighting the X-men (kicks there ass) but the X-men still take the kids. Next issue is mostly about Blindfold and the central villain so far. Buy. This Book. NOW!

All New X-Men #5 & #6

Aquaman #16

Avengers #3- Avengers attack the peeps on Mars. Some cool fighting moments but in the end, Captain Universe basically Deus Ex Machinas them. They agree to stay on Mars and the Avengers take the new Adam.

Avengers #4– Origin story of this version of Hyperion. Also another look into how this book connects with New Avengers.

Captain America #3– Arnim Zola has attacked himself to Captain America somehow. Ykes.

Daredevil #22

Daredevil: End of Days #4/8

Deadpool #4

Hawkeye #7

Gambit #8

Indestructible Hulk #3

Punisher Nightmare #1- #5

Punisher War Zone #4/5

Secret Avengers #36

Scarlet Spider #13

Thunderbolts #3– The Leader is Rulk’s contact in all of this as he is pumping him with just enough gamma to make him smart again and says he will kill him when he is done with him. Deadpool jokes than Punisher will put a bullet in his head as soon as he finds out the Leader is there. And at the end… The Punisher puts a bullet in the Leader’s head as soon as he sees that he is there.

Venom #30

Cable and X-Force #3

Conan the Barbarian #12

Hellboy in Hell #2

Justice League #16

Morbius the Living Vampire #1– Explains the back story of the book… kind of boring and not worth the read if you read the .1 Amazing Spider-Man issue.

Savage Wolverine #1– Wolverine is stuck on the Savage Land with no way out and teams up with the Native girl that I forgot he name. Apparently SHIELD was there for some reason so now Logan is going to figure out the reason.

Venom #29

Wolverine and the X-men #23

Young Avengers #1– Wiccan brings back the Gay Hulk thing’s mother from another dimension… who turns out to be pretty evil. Plus… Kid/Old Loki. Buy this for Loki. .

Avengers Arena #3

Iron Man #5

Uncanny X-Force #1– Awful #1 issue. Awful. Basically, Psylocke has been kicked out of the school because he is unstable. But, Logan has given her a mission that he can’t do himself because he has “retired from that stuff” or some bullshit.

Wolverine and the X-Men #24

This Month in Comics: December 2012

Best of the Best

All New X-men #3
— Cyclops, Magneto, and Magik find Emma and also discover that their powers are messed up. They assume it is due to the Phoenix. Emma has lost her telepathy, Scott has no control, and Magneto seems to be severely weakened. Magik on the other hand seems stronger than ever. Emma has disowned Scott and at the very end, the O5 X-men show up at their doorstep.

Amazing Spider-Man #699
Amazing Spider-Man #700
— The end of Peter Parker, as we see how Doc Ock steals Peter’s body. In the end, Peter convinces Ock to do good… and dies. What the Fuck? This is only in this section because of its significance… the book and death of Parker was lame in my opinion and seems totally out of character.

Batman #15 (Death of the Family crossover)
— Batman Inc keep debating whether or not the Joker really knows their identities  I haven’t read any of the other crossovers to know if this is true or not frankly lol. But, Batman uses his detective skills and figures out Joker has been threatening the staff at Arkham Asylum and is transforming the place, presumably for the final hoorah between the two. Book ends with Batman walking into Arkham.

Gambit #7
— This first arc has been really really fun. Gambit finally gets the best of his captors and once again we get some cool uses of his powers. If you like Gambit at all (like I do) this book is awesome.

Thor: God of Thunder #3
—This continues to be the absolute best Marvel NOW book and my favorite book out right now. Thor continues his hunt for the Gor across three timelines. Young Thor enters the cave of Gor and is attacked once again. Modern Thor finds this cave again with the help of Iron Man and even Stark sees the fear in his eeyes. Thor only finds another God hiding there. King Thor is being overwhelmed by the dark beasts of Gor.

X-men Legacy #3
— This is an unexpected AWESOME book. Legion is trying to rescue two mutant kids but at the same time regain control of his personalities/powers and stop the kids from killing his soul. He ends up succeeding and right as he is leaving, Logan’s X-Men show up to stop him, thinking he is stealing the kids and causing mayhem like he used too. This book is just awesome so far and one of my favorites of Marvel NOW.

All New X-Men #4
Aquaman #15 (Throne of Atlantis crossover)

Avengers #1
Avengers #2
— Still setting stuff up but this book seems like it will be really good once it finally gets rolling. Basically just two issues of team building and giving us an idea of who these villains are.

Avengers Arena #1
Captain America #2– Much better than issue #1.
Deadpool #3
Indestructible Hulk #2
Justice League #15 (Throne of Atlantis crossover)
Punisher War Zone #2/5
Scarlet Spider #12.1

A+X #3
Avenging Spider-Man #15.1

Cable and X-Force #1
Cable and X-Force #2
All we really know so far is that Cable has some brain issue where he is seeing visions of the future and he has assembled this team to stop his visions. And the visions have something to do with the TO virus. Oh, and Hope has kinda, sorta joined the team. And we know Colossus powers are messed up like the other Phoenix 5. But really… this book isn’t going anywhere and is in the same boat as Thunderbolts in being a disappointment so far.

Conan the Barbarian #11
Daredevil #21
Iron Man #3
Secret Avengers #35
Scarlet Spider #12

Thunderbolts #1
Thunderbolts #2
— Both issues are suprisngly average so far. I hope this picks up soon… I had a lot of hope for this book

Uncanny X-Force #35
— This wasn’t a fair way to end this series. This was one of my favorite comic book runs but Remender’s stories got compressed due to Marvel NOW and you could really tell with this final issue. It was essentially a rush to tie up loose ends at the last second. It wasn’t all bad I guess. Fantomex is still alive.. but now there are three of them as he has three brains or some shit. We find out that old Logan told present day Logan that if he didn’t kill Daken, all his students would be killed by him like his were. And we got a cool Deadpool/Evan moment.

Venom #28

Amazing Spider-Man #699.1
— Morbius breaks free from the Raft while Doc Ock breaks out. There… I just told you everything relevant about this issue without wasting your time. Just a set up to Morbius: The Living Vampire series.

Avengers Arena #2
Daredevil: End of Days #3/8
Hawkeye #6
Iron Man #4

Hellboy in Hell #1
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle #17
Wolverine #317
Wolverine and the X-Men #22– I don’t know what the hell is happening with this book anymore.
