Slim pickings again this month. Not much really to talk about although Kingsman is highly anticipated. And if you haven’t seen John Wick, February is the time to do it (and you won’t be disappointed).
Is it May yet?
Best Theater Release: Kingsman: The Secret Service
Best Home Release: John Wick
Best Red Box Release: John Wick
Date: February 6
Verdict: I am so starved for a decent movie that I will probably go see this if the reviews are above average. I don’t have a whole lot of interest in it but sci-fi action movie sounds up my avenue.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Date: February 13
Verdict: YES! (unless reviews are terrible). Looks like a fun, violent movie and was in my top 10 anticipation list.
Date: February 3
Verdict: Will probably purchase used in a month or two but definitely will buy it.
Date: February 3
Verdict: Need to see it on Red Box first. Didn’t hear a lot of good things about it.
Red Box Release
Date: February 3
Verdict: I will just buy it eventually but if you haven’t seen this good movie, here is your chance.
This list took some thinking outside the top 3. The top 3 I am super excited for, especially number one. After number 6 though, I had to think long and hard to find stuff to fill in 7-10. This year is nothing like last where I could have named 15 movies off the top of my head to at least consider.
#10- Mad Max: Fury
I have no idea what this movie is. I have no idea who Mad Max is. But, all my trusted websites keep talking about it as if it should be awesome so… there it is! Looks like its some heavy action at the worst so, might catch my attention.
I am not really a Bond fan. I have only seen a couple of them ever and was generally bored by them. I thought Skyfall was crazy overrated but, due to a weak year, this movie makes the list.
If this movie is as good as the first, this will be a criminally low placing. However, if it is as bad/average as the second one, it belongs no where on this list. I am hedging my bets a little bit, but Iike the next two movies on my list, I am scared more than anticipating it.
#7- Terminator: Genisys
Talk about scared. I was scared about this movie before I saw the trailer… the trailer then scared the living shit out of me. The trailer makes this movie look TERRIBLE. This movie is this high on the list due to T1 and T2 alone (and I didn’t mind Salvation honestly). This is a hopeful rating more than anything.
#6- Fantastic 4
This is only here because it is a comic book movie. We have gotten nothing so far in regards to promotion. Only a couple of leaked images (one awesome, one terrible), horrid rumors (found footage? Doom a blogger?), and me being scared shitless. The best thing about Fantastic Four is their villains (Doom, Galactus) and Doom sounds terrible right now. It seems like they may be going the Batman route (realistic-ish) which works for Batman because he is human. I… I just… this could get ugly.
Finally, we get to movies I am actually excited to see instead of hoping and praying it is halfway decent. This list is nothing like last years awesomeness but it is still solid and feature a couple of billion dollar franchises.
#5- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars as a whole is really cool on paper. Really cool reading about stuff on Wiki. And then I watch the movies and get really confused on why everyone nuts every time they hear the word “Star Wars.” Phantam Menance was garbage. Attack of the Clones was garbage. Revenge of the Sith has some good moments but some very, very cringe worthy moments as well and in general, makes little sense when looking at the Star Wars franchise as a whole. Then you get to the original trilogy which… is ok I guess? Hell, my favorite “Star Wars” related thing is problem the Clone Wars animated cartoon.
But despite all my criticism… like I said, on paper this should be awesome. Can it reach that potential though?
#4- The Kingsman: Secret Service
This looks fucking fun. The End.
Ant-Man… the forgotten Marvel Universe movie. Tucked behind Age of Ultron but before the start of Phase 3 with Civil War. This movie could easily be this years Guardians of the Galaxy or be… wait… Marvel doesn’t make bad movies do they? At worst they are “Iron Man 2” level? YES!
But this looks fun as well. A heist movie with a strong cast… I expect an above average Marvel flick. And for this year, that gets you number 3.
#2- Jurassic World
I don’t know why I am so excited about this honestly. Jurassic Park 2 was miserable. #3 is one of those, “if its on cable and on one of the good parts I will watch for a bit” movies.
Luckily for the franchise, the first one is epic (could be because it came out when I was in elementary school… probably explains peoples obsession with Star Wars as well huh?). Chris Pratt is epic. The trailer was bananas and we didn’t even see the mystery dinosaur that fucks people up. And somewhat controlled Raptors? Yep, sign me up!
#1- Avengers: Age of Ultron
This is number one by a LARGE LARGE margin. This movie looks absolutely EPIC. The first one was the best comic book movie ever. There is no scale to hold back my anticipation for this movie. Hell, even looking ahead years and years, this is still near the top of anticipation, only behind its own sequels and Black Panther. Ultron looks utterly terrifying in this. The seeds for Civil War will be planted. The appearance of Witch and Quicksilver. Hulkbuster armor. Rumors of T’challa. What more could you want?
It is time for the dog days of January, historically one of the worst months around for movies. This year does not buck that trend. There is only one interesting movie in the theaters this January and only one interesting home release (and it is animated!) and even the Red Box releases are TERRIBLE.
Best Theatrical Release: Tak3n (Taken 3)
Best Home Release: Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (Animated)
Best Red Box Release: A Walk Among Tombstones? There is nothing good.
Date: January 9
Verdict: Taken was epic. Taken 2 wasn’t good. They switched up the premise a bit so that gives me some hope it will breath a breath of fresh air into the franchise… until I heard the director of Taken 2 was making it. Fuck. Oh well… only thing playing in January so I will be seeing this in theaters unless the reviews are absolutely terrible.
Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (Animated)
Date: January 27
Verdict: DC animated releases are usually on point and this one focuses on Aquaman which is awesome. I read the comic this movie is based on and it wasn’t too bad so… this is likely a used purchase.
Red Box Release
There is literally nothing I give two shits about. A Walk Among Tombstones, Fury, The Maze Runner come out if that is your thing but… it isn’t mine.
December has one crown jewel, one heart of the mountain, one ARKENSTONE… The Hobbit. My most anticipated movie of the year. Who cares what else happens this month… this is all that matters. (There are some good home releases out though lol)
Best Theatrical Release: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Best Home Release: Guardians of the Galaxy
Best Red Box Release: Guardians of the Galaxy
Exodus: Gods and Kings
Date: December 12
Verdict: I… I don’t know? It seems like it is just a swords and sandals movie with some Godly speech and some plague stuff. So… cool? Noah was so fucking bad that this movie scares the shit out of me. Probably be a red box movie.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Date: December 17
Verdict: This is THE movie of the year for me. The last movie of the Hobbit trilogy and even more depressing… the last movie in Middle Earth, probably until Chris Toilken dies and whoever inherits the rights goes broke. I have mentioned before how this could potentially be the best Middle Earth movie of the six (I am not saying its likely just that it could) and any movie named after a battle will immediately have my attention.
After the jump, home and Red Box releases…
At least from a theatrical movie release stand point, this will be the oddest post yet…
Because there is literally nothing I have two shits about. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Let’s get this party started though…
Best Theatrical Release: Nothing (Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt 1 is probably the closest)
Best Home Release: Hercules
Best Red Box Release: X-Men: Days of Future Past
– Nothing. Literally nothing.
Sure, I could just post shit like Hunger Games, Interstellar (zzzzzz), Big Hero 6, and other shit. But honestly, there is nothing that interests me this month.
Go see John Wick and Equalizer instead. Go to the old movie theater playing Guardians of the Galaxy.
Or save money for The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.
Red Box and Home Releases (which are much much better) after the jump…
The Fall of Shit continues in the theaters and Red Box. There are a couple home releases but really… will The Hobbit get here soon please? The best thing you could probably do this month is go see Guardians of the Galaxy again before it leaves the theaters (home release isn’t until Christmas time…)
Best Theater Release: Dracula Untold
Best Home Release: X-Men: Days of Future Past
Best Red Box Release: Godzilla (2014)
Date: October 10
Verdict: This might be fun or it might be another I, Frankenstein situation. Chances of me seeing this in theater is slim. Chances of me seeing in Red Box are high.
Date: October 24
Verdict: Looks like pure Red Box fun.
Home and Red Box Releases after the jump…
Welp, the Summer Movie Season is officially over. Welcome to the dog days of Fall where you will be lucky to get one good movie a month come out. I really have nothing to really look forward to until December with the last Hobbit movie.
But, the one good thing about Fall is all the Blu ray releases from the movies that came out in the summer. So, buy those instead of going to the theaters to see all the crap and re-live the summer.
Best Theater Release: The Equilizer
Best Home Release: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Best Red Box Release: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
A Walk Among Tombstones
Date: September 19
Verdict: No. It has Liam Neeson in it though?
Date: September 26
Verdict: It looks good and entertaining with an angry, lethal Denzel. I don’t know if I will see in theaters but I will definitely see it.
Home and Red Box releases after the jump!
August is surprisingly solid, at least in the theaters. It is anchored by my #2 most anticipated movie of the year in Guardians of the Galaxy but also sports Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and another Expendables. The Home and Red Box releases are downright pitiful though, with nothing reaching the “must buy” category.
Best Theater Release: Guardians of the Galaxy
Best Home Release: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Best Red Box Release: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Guardians of the Galaxy
Date: August 1
Verdict: FUCK YES! So excited, this movie looks fun as hell and the reviews have been more than solid.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Date: August 8
Verdict: Unless the reviews are just terrible, I will see it opening weekend.
Date: August 15
Verdict: I really don’t know. I was excited for this movie as it is a throw back and they added awesomeness like Snipes and Mel Gibson… and then they put a PG 13 rating on it which is just fucking annoying. Way to piss off your fan base guys. Probably wait until it shows up in the cheap theater at this point.
Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Date: August 22
Verdict: I never saw the first one… and holy long title Batman.
Check out the home and red box releases after the jump…
What the hell is going on this year? April and May were rocking movie wise and then… meh. June was incredibly weak and July is only mildly better. But, lucky for July and us, it is anchored by the awesome Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Also, the home and red box releases are starting to increase in quality, which helps soften the shitty theatrical blow a little more.
Best Theatrical Release: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Best Home Release: The Raid 2
Best Redbox Release: The Raid 2
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Date: July 11
Verdict: FUCK YEAH! APES ON HORSES!
Date: July 25
Verdict: Highly likely. Hercules is cool and the Rock is cool so, why not? Seems kind of generic but whatever.
Date: July 25
Verdict: Probably not. The movie does look pretty good though. But seems more of a Red Box thing for me.
