Why Spider-Man Being Added to the MCU Really, Really Sucks

A lot of people forget or do not know that the Avengers didn’t used to be popular. People didn’t give a flying fuck about Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, ect. That is just what Marvel was left with after selling off the rights to the much more popular X-Men and Spider. Hell, they even sold the rights to Blade, Punisher, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four while being stuck with the Avengers! It sounds nuts now but the only reason Iron Man and company are as popular as they are is because Marvel didn’t have any choice. That is all they were left with. They made do with what they had and thank god they did because it has become awesome.

This lack of the big dawgs (Spider-Man and X-men) have also lead to movies being made such as Guardians of the Galaxy and future movies such as C and D list Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Inhumans, ect. If Spidey and X-men were around, these movies simply would not have been in production because… why would you when you could make much more money with Spider-Man, Wolverine, and X-men. Financially it makes no sense.

Sadly, with a return of Spider-Man to Marvel (in some capacity), we are going to see the effects of an A list character mucking up shit for everyone else.

Already, Spider-man has taken a prime summer spot from Thor, pushing Thor 3 (called one of the most important movies by Fiege….) back into the fall. And it has sent a ripple effect through all the announced movies, pushing them all back by 4-6 months. Even my beloved Black Panther!

And when the Avengers all meet up… do you think Spider-Man or Dr. Strange is going to get more lines? In Civil War, you think they are going to cut Stark’s screen time or T’challa? When Phase 3 ends (and the contract of the big three end as well) and the Avengers possibly need a new leader other than Stark/Cap… you think Spider-Man is a possibility or Captain Marvel and Luke Cage?

If you are a fan of Spider-Man… this is great news. But fan of C-list characters? This fucking sucks. You have one more A lister (THE A lister at Marvel) stealing a movie slot every 3 years that would have went to some lesser known characters.

Listen, I like Spider-Man. But there is really nothing unique about him at this point in the movie world. There is nothing super interesting. He is just a prototypical hero… his only real defining feature is that he is in high school.

You want different? How about a race of people with mutant like powers when exposed to a mist lead by a king who can’t speak without blowing up a city (Inhumans). How about an African, genius, king who leads the most technological country in the world that has never been conquered by outside force (Black Panther). What about the Sorcerer Supreme!

Wanting Spider-Man with Marvel may be a “be careful what you wish for” thing for us peeps who prefer C-list heros.

Black Panther Thoughts and Fan Boy Reactions

I was on a random, Indiana Pacers blog discussing the Avengers movie and bitching that the Black Panther still hasn’t had a movie when someone posted 30 seconds later…

“Marvel just announced a Black Panther movie.”

I swear, my heart may have stopped a bit. I immediately raced to comicbookmovies.com to make sure I wasn’t being trolled. And sure enough, there was a post saying essentially, “Marvel announces next slate of movies.” I clicked the post and raced down to find “Black Panther” in the list.

And there it was!

I was so excited I didn’t even read to see the rest of the announcements. I immediately just raced to the CBR forum Black Panther Appreciation thread to celebrate and start talking about the movie immediately. It was only then I started reading about the other movies and about the details of Black Panther.

T’challa/Black Panther is simply my favorite comic book super hero. Priest’s run is one of my favorite comic book runs ever. The Client and Enemy of the State are two of my favorite arcs ever. Liss’s run was fantastic. Seeing T’challa front in center during Hickman’s New Avenger/Avenger/Time Runs Out run could potentially be T’challa’s shining moment (once the rebuilding starts and the deconstruction ends). T’challa in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes was easily one of the highlights of the show.

Simply put… a genius, ninja, master strategist,┬áKing of an fictional African Warrior Nation that just happens to be the most advanced nation in the world who is also a super hero? DAT IS IT MANE!

After the jump, less fan boy ramblings and more facts and thoughts on what we actually know about the Black Panther in the MCU…

November 2014 Movie Preview: This is Ugly

At least from a theatrical movie release stand point, this will be the oddest post yet…

Because there is literally nothing I have two shits about. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Let’s get this party started though…

Best Theatrical Release: Nothing (Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt 1 is probably the closest)
Best Home Release: Hercules
Best Red Box Release: X-Men: Days of Future Past

Theatrical Release

– Nothing. Literally nothing.

Sure, I could just post shit like Hunger Games, Interstellar (zzzzzz), Big Hero 6, and other shit. But honestly, there is nothing that interests me this month.

Go see John Wick and Equalizer instead. Go to the old movie theater playing Guardians of the Galaxy.

Or save money for The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.

Red Box and Home Releases (which are much much better) after the jump…

Marvel Drops the Mic on the World: Marvel’s Full Slate of Movies is Announced + Extended AoU Trailer

Welp, that escalated quickly.

DC went and announced their schedule, effectively bringing ALL of the attention on them (and away from Downey Jr saying he would be in Cap 3). And for good reason… Justice League is the most famous of all super hero teams, Wonder Woman is the comic book heroine, and well… it looked like DC finally had a PLAN in regards to the DC movie universe. Sure… I did not like all of that plan (Erza Miller? Cyborg? Shazam?) but at least it was something.

It seems Marvel did not approve of the attention not being only on them. First, they released the Age of Ultron trailer (after it was leaked) which effectively made people go “who is DC” and focus only on the fact that Ultron seems terrifying.

And then Marvel said there would be more on Tuesday. Most of us expected maybe a new scene in Age of Ultron. Maybe some details on Captain America 3.

We got more than we expected. We essentially got EVERY SINGLE movie announcement in Phase 3… including some fan favorites that we have been clamoring and begging for.

So here is what was announced. Just a quick post for scheduling… I expect to go over more of these in later posts… some of them are worthy of their own posts all together. All other things are put on hold at this point because.. MARVEL WINS THE INTERNET!

So, here is the new movie slate for Marvel…

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Captain America: Civil War
Doctor Strange

Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Thor: Ragnarok
Black Panther

Captain Marvel
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1

Avengers: Infinity War Part 2

And then Marvel released an extended trailer… that has some Marvel trademark humor and because of it, makes the serious stuff more serious. Epic Epic Epic

LOL at Thor’s face when Rogers moves the hammer a bit…

Let’s Take a Look at the DC Movie Slate

2016 Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice – This is the one we were already sure about. All we knew was rumors and rumors and rumors. What we knew for sure is that Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman (some how) would be in the movie. We heard rumors of others (Aquaman, Flash) at least making an appearance. I believe that has been confirmed. They were also using part of the plot of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. All in all this movie seems bloated as fuck but who cares… ITS BATMAN VS SUPERMAN! We still have no idea what “brute” will be around for Superman and Wonder Woman to beat on. We really don’t know shit but…. BATMAN VS SUPERMAN! Suicide Squad – I know very little about them but it will be interesting none the less because it is very different premise. Instead of heroes, we have VILLAINS, which is a first for movies I do believe. Villains forced to do hero like stuff due to their sentence. Will either be pretty damn cool or pretty fucking stupid. Really depending on the cast as well (which villains). Not sure if this is set in the DC universe though? 2017 Wonder Woman – And now comes the WW, the iconic super heroine, movie. But the big question is.. is this a flashback origin story? A continuation of BvS? We have no clue nor any idea who the villain will be. We DO know that they are making her the half daughter of Zeus and a demigod instead of her classic, stupid, built from clay story. So, basically, she is woman Thor. Justice League: Part One – This should really be part 2 considering BvS is basically Justice League lite. Anyway, rumor is the roster will consist of at least Batman, Superman, WW, Aquaman, and Flash. A great chance Cyborg is there and maybe Shazam. The rumor so far is that the main villain will be Brainiac, which fits I suppose. 2018 The Flash – This is who is playing The Flash 4160321-9643466471-tumbl HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAA … AHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHA They better put the fucking BATMAN in this movie or this will end badly. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT? That is FLASH? That… emo/goth/tranny thing AAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHHA Aquaman – This is staring anti-Gothboy above, jacked Jason Momoa. Rumor has it this will feature Mera, Manta, and The Trench from the recent new 52 run. I think this movie is going to KILL IT honestly. Can’t wait. 2019 Shazam – I don’t like Shazam. I think the idea is stupid. But they have The Rock playing Black Adam so… yay? Justice League: Part 2 – So instead of going with the slow build up plan, DC is just going to blitzkreig Justice League with essentially 3 movies in 6 years. Anyway, the rumor right now is that at the end of Justice League: Part 1, a Green Lantern comes to Earth with warnings about Darkseid headed that way. We will see… 2020 Cyborg – So the award for “First Black Dude Since Blade” to get a solo is… fucking Cyborg??? Not Black Panther, Not Luke Cage, not John Stewart… but perrenial side-kick CYBORG? So odd… I really do not know how Cyborg holds a solo movie but whatever. Green Lantern – So which Green Lantern is this? Hal Jordan again? John Stewart? Kyle? Who know.

2014 Summer Movie Awards

The Summer movie season is over (for me anyway). So let us get down to some awards…

Summer movie season = May through August. Technically, Marvel expanded the movie season by puting a movie in April but… May through August it is!

Best Overall Movie (combining theater experience and rewatchability), Best Comic Book Movie: X-Men: Days of Future Past
– This movie was just great all around, both on the action front and the emotional impact AND the impact on the franchise as a whole.
Runner Up: Guardians of the Galaxy

July 2014 Movie Preview

What the hell is going on this year? April and May were rocking movie wise and then… meh. June was incredibly weak and July is only mildly better. But, lucky for July and us, it is anchored by the awesome Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Also, the home and red box releases are starting to increase in quality, which helps soften the shitty theatrical blow a little more.

Best Theatrical Release: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Best Home Release: The Raid 2
Best Redbox Release: The Raid 2

Theater Release

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Date: July 11

Date: July 25

Verdict: Highly likely. Hercules is cool and the Rock is cool so, why not? Seems kind of generic but whatever.

Date: July 25

Verdict: Probably not. The movie does look pretty good though. But seems more of a Red Box thing for me.

Channing Tatum Cast as… GAMBIT? Wait, wut?

This is fucking odd.

On one hand this is good. It means Gambit WILL be re-appearing in the X-Men movies, with rumors being he might first appear in Apocalypse. It means Gambit WILL be getting a solo movie. Which means we should get into all the cool back story stuff with Gambit (Thieve’s Guild, lady’s man, maybe Sinister?). It all HAS to be an improvement over the abomination that appeared in Wolverine Origins.

But… Channing Tatum? No matter how well he is doing in the comedy front… his action movies kinda of suck. GI Joe blew junks all over the place. And Channing Tatum with a Nawlin’s accent? Seriously? Lol thinking about it.

Gambit is one of, if not my favorite, X-men. His powers are cool. His background is cool. His stuff with Mr. Sinister is cool/weird. I wanna see the REAL Gambit on screen… but it is hard to trust Fox in that regard. I really like a lot of the X-Men movies, but a lot of their characterizations are just waaaaaay off and I fear with this casting choice it is going to be way off again.

June 2014 Movie Preview

This month pretty much blows. April was anchored by awesome Cap and Raid 2, May was an explosion with Spider-Man, Godzilla, X-Men along with DVD/Red Box Hobbitt. And then June comes along and… I will see probably one movie in the theaters and I won’t rush there that weekend. Summer is supposed to be THE time for may type of movies but it looks like June is getting skipped this year.

Best Theatrical Release: Transformers: Age of Extinction
Best Home Release: 300: Rise of an Empire
Best Red Box Release: 3 Days to Kill??

Theatrical Release

Edge of Tomorrow

Date: June 5

Verdict: I just don’t see it happening, even though reviews so far have been solid. Probably a good Red Box rental or cheap dollar theater.

22 Jump Street

Date: June 13

Verdict: I don’t do comedies but I heard 21 Jump Street was pretty good so if it is your thing…

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Date: June 27

Verdict: There it is. Probably the blockbuster of the summer (money wise). With Bay you know what you will get at this point but switching Shia for Wahlberg is a huge net positive. I actually enjoy the Transformers movies for what they are (robots killing each other) plus… it has Optimus Prime with a giant sword riding Gridlock/T-rex Dinobot that breaths fire. Sold.
